Political and economic relations of China and Ethiopia in the 21 century. Reciprocity or asymmetry?
Political and economic relations of China and Ethiopia in the 21 century. Reciprocity or asymmetry?
| dc.abstract.en | This thesis looks into how China and Ethiopia have built their political and economic relationship in the 21st century, especially through the lens of reciprocity and asymmetry. Although both sides often describe their cooperation as friendly and mutually beneficial, the reality is more complex. The paper shows that while there are areas of mutual interest and collaboration, power differences still influence how decisions are made and whose goals are prioritized. The research draws on several scholars, including Brantly Womack, David Lake, and others like Bilate, Zou, and Geda, to examine how political trust, discourse, and material support interact with underlying imbalances. After outlining the theoretical background, the thesis analyzes both political and economic aspects of the relationship, showing how high-level visits, policy alignment, and infrastructure projects can reflect both cooperation and inequality. The final chapter focuses on future challenges and discusses possible ways the relationship could become more balanced—such as by investing in local capabilities, broadening strategic options, and managing dependency more effectively. Overall, the thesis argues that the China–Ethiopia relationship reflects a mix of genuine collaboration and structural asymmetry, and that recognizing both sides of this dynamic is key to understanding how the partnership functions—and where it might go next. |
