Analysis of the English Audiovisual Translation of the Film “Akademia Pana Kleksa”

dc.abstract.en	This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the English audiovisual translation of the Polish film Akademia Pana Kleksa (2023), a modern adaptation of Jan Brzechwa’s classic novel, which holds a prominent place in Polish literature and culture. The film blends fantasy, original songs, wordplay, and even a constructed language, making it a rich and challenging case study for translation. The thesis aims to examine which translation strategies were applied in both the subtitled and dubbed English versions, and to evaluate their effectiveness. The analysis is based on Henrik Gottlieb’s typology of translation techniques. A total of 138 examples were examined using both qualitative and quantitative methods, including lines of dialogue, song lyrics, names, jokes, and wordplay. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The theoretical part presents key concepts in audiovisual translation. The methodological section introduces the research questions and hypotheses. The analytical chapter compares the use of techniques in subtitles and dubbing. The findings show that dubbing tends to be more localized and adapted to rhythm and melody, while subtitles preserve more of the original phrasing. The chosen techniques allowed translators to retain the film’s style and message while making it accessible to English-speaking viewers.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza praca licencjacka poświęcona jest analizie tłumaczenia audiowizualnego filmu Akademia Pana Kleksa (2023) na język angielski, w wersji z napisami oraz dubbingiem. Film stanowi nowoczesną adaptację klasycznej powieści Jana Brzechwy – ważnej pozycji polskiej literatury dziecięcej – i zawiera wiele elementów wymagających kreatywnego podejścia tłumaczeniowego, takich jak świat fantasy, gry słowne, piosenki i sztuczny język. Celem pracy było zbadanie, jakie techniki tłumaczeniowe zostały użyte oraz ocenienie ich skuteczności. Analiza opiera się na klasyfikacji technik zaproponowanych przez Henrika Gottlieba. Zastosowano metodę jakościową i ilościową – przeanalizowano 138 przykładów, w tym dialogi, piosenki, nazwy własne oraz gry słowne. Praca składa się z czterech rozdziałów. Część teoretyczna omawia podstawy przekładu audiowizualnego. Rozdział metodologiczny prezentuje pytania badawcze i hipotezy. Część praktyczna analizuje wybrane fragmenty, porównują techniki użyte w napisach i dubbingu. Wyniki badania pokazują, że dubbing charakteryzuje się częstszym stosowaniem lokalizacji i adaptacją do rytmu oraz melodii piosenek, a napisy zachowują więcej elementów oryginalnych. Zastosowane techniki pozwoliły skutecznie oddać sens i styl filmu anglojęzycznej widowni.
