Nature and Gender in Romantic Poetry: Different Portrayals of the Natural World

dc.abstract.en	This thesis examines how Romantic poets imagined nature in ways shaped by gender, culture, and the social expectations of their time. Rather than treating nature as a single universal Romantic ideal, the study argues that representations of nature in Romantic poetry are shaped by questions of poetic authority, social position, and real life experience shaped by them. Through a comparative reading of selected male and female Romantic poets, the thesis explores how nature becomes a medium through which writers explore the questions related to self and their artistic identity. Chapter One establishes the critical and theoretical framework of the study by discussing Romantic conceptions of nature, the pastoral, the sublime, ecological criticism, and gender approaches to Romantic authorship. Chapter Two turns to male Romantic poetry, focusing on William Wordsworth, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and John Keats, and considers how nature is used to explore themes of memory, political aspiration, beauty, mortality, and the poet’s relation to the world. Chapter Three examines Mary Robinson, Charlotte Smith, and Felicia Hemans, showing how their poetry engages with nature in ways that are equally ambitious but shaped by different cultural pressures and forms of authority. The chapter pays attention to how women poets use imagery of nature to address questions of identity, history, nation, and social expectation. By combining ecocriticism with a gender-focused reading, this thesis aims to contribute to Romantic studies by showing how concepts of nature and gender operate together in shaping the literary authority among poets and representation of their own experiences.
dc.abstract.pl	Niniejsza rozprawa analizuje sposoby przedstawiania natury w poezji romantycznej, uwzględniając wpływ płci, uwarunkowań kulturowych oraz społecznych oczekiwań epoki. Zamiast traktować naturę jako jednolity i uniwersalny ideał romantyczny, praca dowodzi, że jej literackie reprezentacje są kształtowane przez kwestie autorytetu poetyckiego, pozycji społecznej oraz wynikających z nich doświadczeń życiowych twórców. Poprzez porównawczą analizę twórczości wybranych poetów i poetek romantycznych rozprawa ukazuje, w jaki sposób natura staje się medium służącym refleksji nad podmiotowością oraz tożsamością artystyczną. Rozdział pierwszy przedstawia teoretyczne i krytyczne podstawy analizy. Omawia romantyczne koncepcje natury, kategorie sielanki i wzniosłości, założenia ekokrytyki oraz perspektywy badań nad romantyzmem uwzględniające problematykę płci. Rozdział drugi poświęcony jest twórczości męskich poetów romantycznych, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem Williama Wordswortha, Percy’ego Bysshe’a Shelleya oraz Johna Keatsa. Analizuje sposób, w jaki natura staje się przestrzenią refleksji nad pamięcią, aspiracjami politycznymi, pięknem, śmiertelnością oraz relacją poety ze światem. Rozdział trzeci koncentruje się na twórczości Mary Robinson, Charlotte Smith i Felicii Hemans, ukazując, że ich poezja podejmuje temat natury z równą ambicją artystyczną, choć w warunkach odmiennych uwarunkowań kulturowych i form autorytetu literackiego. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono temu, w jaki sposób poetki wykorzystują obrazowanie natury do eksplorowania zagadnień związanych z tożsamością, historią, narodem oraz społecznymi oczekiwaniami wobec kobiet. Łącząc perspektywę ekokrytyczną z analizą uwzględniającą kategorię płci, rozprawa wnosi wkład do badań nad romantyzmem, ukazując, w jaki sposób wyobrażenia natury i konstrukcje płci współtworzą autorytet literacki poetów oraz kształtują reprezentacje ich doświadczeń.
