Poziom rozwoju państw Amazonii a skutki konfliktów wokół wydobycia złota
Poziom rozwoju państw Amazonii a skutki konfliktów wokół wydobycia złota
| dc.abstract.en | The study examines the relationship between the level of development of Amazonian countries and the impacts of gold-mining-related conflicts as perceived by protesters. The Amazon, as a region of high environmental sensitivity and diverse socio-political conditions, is a hotspot for conflicts arising from mining activities. The aim of the study was to determine whether differences in national development levels influence the types of conflict impacts and their assessments. The theoretical section discusses the concepts of development and environmental conflict, as well as the natural and non-natural conditions shaping the Amazonian states. The empirical analysis was based on conflicts documented in the Global Atlas of Environmental Justice and on four development indicators: the Human Development Index (HDI), the Social Progress Index (SPI), the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), and the Index of Economic Freedom (IOEF). Categories of conflict impacts and their evaluations were compiled, followed by a chi-square test to verify the existence of relationships between development level and perceived impacts. The results indicate that these relationships are limited: only for HDI was a statistically significant association observed, whereas SPI, EPI, and IOEF showed no relationship with either the types or the assessments of impacts. The findings suggest that the variation in consequences of gold-mining conflicts cannot be clearly attributed to differences in the development levels of Amazonian countries. Despite limitations related to the number of cases and data availability, the study highlights the importance of considering protesters’ perspectives in research on environmental conflicts and underscores the need for further analyses—particularly larger-scale and locally focused studies that more accurately reflect the diversity of the Amazon. |
