Language Evolution or Revolution? A Lexical Analysis of Selected Terms from the „Word of the Year” Rankings with a Focus on the Language of Generation Z

dc.abstract.en	The main aim of this master's thesis was a lexical analysis of selected terms from English-language “Word of the Year” rankings published in 2025, with particular emphasis on the language of Generation Z. The analysis focused on selected words included in rankings published by Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Oxford University Press, Collins Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Dictionary.com, and the American Dialect Society. The study was based on qualitative analysis. It examined the mechanisms of word-formation, types of neologisms, and the likelihood of the analysed words surviving in the English language. The thesis also discusses theories concerning generations and etymology. In addition, the theoretical section presents definitions of word-formation processes, neologisms, and the criteria that increase a word’s chances of becoming established in the language. The thesis concludes with findings intended to verify the consistency of the analytical results with the theoretical framework and with the nature of linguistic changes associated with the presence of Generation Z.
dc.abstract.pl	Głównym celem pracy magisterskiej była analiza leksykalna wybranych terminów z anglojęzycznych rankingów „Słowo Roku” opublikowanych w 2025 roku, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem języka pokolenia Z. Analizie poddane zostały wybrane słowa zawarte w rankingach opublikowanych przez Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Oxford University Press, Collins Dictionary, Cambridge Dictionary, Dictionary.com i American Dialect Society. Badanie w pracy oparte było na analizie jakościowej. Przeanalizowane zostały mechanizmy powstawania nowych słów, typy neologizmów oraz szanse na przetrwanie analizowanych słów w języku angielskim. W pracy opisane zostały teorie dotyczące pokoleń i etymologii. Dodatkowo w części teoretycznej przybliżone zostały definicje mechanizmów słowotwórczych, neologizmów, a także kryteria, dzięki którym słowo ma szanse na przetrwanie w języku. Na końcu pracy dodane zostały wnioski, które miały potwierdzić zgodność wyników analizy z częścią teoretyczną i charakterem zmian w języku jakie niesie ze sobą obecność pokolenia Z.
