Anne of Green Gables now and then. A comparative analysis of selected aspects of the oldest and the latest translation of Lucy Maud Montgomery's novel

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza przekładu elementów kulturowych w najstarszym i najnowszym tłumaczeniu powieści Anne of Green Gables. Pierwsze z nich, autorstwa Rozalii Bernsteinowej, nosi tytuł Ania z Zielonego Wzgórza. Zostało wydane w latach 1911-1912 i uchodzi za przekład kanoniczny. Drugi natomiast pochodzi z roku 2022. Jego autorką jest Anna Bańkowska, a tytuł został przetłumaczony jako Anne z Zielonych Szczytów. Jest to przykład przekładu polemicznego. Praca składa się z czterech części. W pierwszym rozdziale przedstawiono definicję tłumaczenia kulturowego, strategie domestykacji oraz egzotyzacji, klasyfikację elementów kulturowych i aluzji intertekstualnych, a także techniki ich tłumaczenia. Drugi rozdział wprowadza pojęcia serii translatorskiej oraz hipotezy retranslacji. W trzecim rozdziale omówiono polską recepcję powieści, a także cechy charakterystyczne przekładów Bernsteinowej oraz Bańkowskiej. W części praktycznej dokonano analizy porównawczej powyższych przekładów pod kątem zastosowanych w nich strategii i technik tłumaczenia wybranych elementów kulturowych. Na końcu pracy znajdują się wnioski.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the oldest and the most recent translations of the novel Anne of Green Gables. The first, made by Rozalia Bernsteinowa, is Ania z Zielonego Wzgórza. It was published in 1911-1912 and is considered the canonical translation. The second, on the other hand, by Anna Bańkowska, is from 2022, and the title is translated as Anne z Zielonych Szczytów. It is an example of a polemical translation. The work consists of four sections. The first chapter introduces the definition of cultural translation, the strategies of domestication and foreignization, the classification of culture-bound items and intertextual allusions, and translation techniques used to deal with them. The second chapter presents the concepts of a translation series and the retranslation hypothesis. The third chapter discusses the Polish reception of the novel and the characteristics of Bernsteinowa’s and Bańkowska’s translations. A comparative analysis of the above translations is carried out in the practical part regarding the strategies and techniques used to translate selected cultural elements. Conclusions can be found at the end of the paper.
