Vulgarisms in the Audiovisual Translation: A Translation Analysis of the English- and Polish-language Versions of the TV series The Ranch

Celem niniejszej pracy jest analiza tłumaczenia wulgaryzmów, przekleństw i wyzwisk z języka polskiego na angielski na przykładzie wybranych fragmentów polskiego serialu telewizyjnego “Ranczo”. Część teoretyczna pracy została podzielona na trzy rozdziały. Pierwszy został poświęcony pojęciom tłumaczenia i translatoryki. Została przedstawiona topologia tłumaczeń jak i główne zainteresowania translatoryki. Następnie omówiono pojęcie tłumaczeń audiowizualnych i scharakteryzowane zostały trzy metody: napisy, dubbing i wersja lektorska. W trzecim rozdziale przedstawione zostały pojęcia wulgaryzmu, przekleństwa i wyzwiska. Omówiono też funkcje wulgaryzmów i ich wpływ na proces tłumaczenia z wyróżnieniem strategii stosowanych do tłumaczenia tekstów zawierających wulgaryzmy. Część analityczna została poświęcona analizie tłumaczenia wybranych fragmentów serialu zawierających wulgaryzmy. Zostały przeanalizowane strategie zastosowane przez tłumacza, następnie tłumaczenie zostało ocenione pod względem jakości.

The aim of this work is to analyze the translation of vulgarisms, swear words and insults from Polish to English based on the Polish TV series “The Ranch”. The theoretical part was divided into three chapters. The first one dealt with the definition of translation and translation topology. Also, the area of translation studies was presented with its main branches. The second chapter was dedicated to audiovisual translations with a focus on subtitling, dubbing and voice-over. Finally, the definition of vulgarisms was explained along with presenting their main functions. The distinction between vulgarism, swear word and insult was explained, and a classification of vulgar expressions was provided. Also, attention was drawn to the impact of the presence of vulgarisms on the translation process. The empirical part focused on the analysis of translation of chosen vulgarisms from the series. The strategies used by the translator were examined, and the overall quality of translation was assessed.
