Subtitling vs. Voice-over: A Critical Comparative Analysis of the Polish Translations of the Series After Life

Celem niniejszej pracy jest krytyczna analiza porównawcza polskich tłumaczeń serialu After Life emitowanego przez serwis streamingowy Netflix. Analizie zostały poddane techniki tłumaczeniowe zastosowane w napisach oraz wersji lektorskiej. Przed przystąpieniem do analizy dokonano gruntownego przeglądu literatury naukowej z dziedziny przekładoznawstwa, aby zapewnić zaplecze teoretyczne. Zostały omówione rozmaite techniki tłumaczeniowe i pojęcie tłumaczenia audiowizualnego wraz z jego trzema głównymi rodzajami. Następnie skupiono się na ogólnej przydatności i wykorzystaniu konkretnych technik tłumaczeniowych w napisach, wersji lektorskiej oraz wersji dubbingowanej. Analiza składa się ze zbioru 60 fragmentów monologów i dialogów z serialu, zestawiając oryginalną angielską wersję językową z jej polskimi odpowiednikami w przekładzie z napisami i z lektorem. W obydwu wariantach przekładu zostały rozpoznane techniki tłumaczeniowe, które następnie szczegółowo opisano i porównano. Ostatnim etapem analizy było wyciągnięcie wniosków końcowych, w których podano częstotliwość występowania poszczególnych technik tłumaczeniowych oraz oceniono wierność tłumaczeń w stosunku do oryginału.

The aim of the present thesis is a critical comparative analysis of Polish translations of the British series After Life broadcast by the American streaming service Netflix. The analysis examines the translation techniques used in the subtitled and voice-over versions. A thorough review of the academic literature on translation studies was conducted in order to provide theoretical background before proceeding with the analysis. Various translation techniques were discussed, as well as the concept of audiovisual translation with its three main types. The focus is then turned to the general usefulness and application of specific translation techniques in subtitling, voice-over and dubbing, taking into account that each of the three types has different characteristics and limitations. The comparative analysis consists of a collection of 60 excerpts of monologs and dialogs from the series, juxtaposing the original English version with its Polish subtitled and voice-over translations. Translation techniques are identified in both variants, then described in detail and compared. The final stage of the analysis was drawing final conclusions, in which the frequency of occurrence of each translation technique was given and the faithfulness of the translations to the original was assessed.
