Hyperbole and Humour in Guy Ritchie’s “London” Films

Praca analizuje znaczenie i wpływ dwóch środków stylistycznych jakimi są hiperbola i humor na konstrukcje i odbiór wybranych prac z filmografii brytyjskiego reżysera i scenarzysty Guy’a Ritchiego. Praca przedstawia sposoby użycia tych elementów na przykładach z trzech filmów reżysera, których akcja dzieje się w Londynie, którymi są Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Bar-rels (1998), Sherlock Holmes (2009) i The Gentlemen (2019). Tekst obrazuje jak Ritchie używa hiperboli i humoru w celu przedstawienia nieraz brutalnych wydarzeń czy negatywnych posta-ci w przerysowany sposób by ułatwić widzom zżycie się ze światami wykreowanymi przez reżysera. The work analyzes the meaning and influence of two stylistic devices, i.e. hyperbole and humor, on the construction and reception of selected works from the filmography of the British director and screenwriter Guy Ritchie. The work presents the methods of using these elements on examples from the director's three films set in London, which are Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), Sherlock Holmes (2009) and The Gentlemen (2019). The text shows how Ritchie uses hyperbole and humor to present sometimes violent events or negative characters in an exaggerated way to help viewers connect with the worlds created by the director. The work additionally compares the methods of using both stylistic devices in all three films, which slightly differ from each other, keeping the common point, which is Ritchie's love of London and his characteristic sense of humor.
