Multilevel English Classes in Primary Education - a survey on level placement and teaching solutions

Niniejsza praca licencjacka bada zjawisko klas wielopoziomowych w polskim szkolnictwie na poziomie podstawowym w przypadku nauki języka angielskiego. Głównym celem tego badania jest dogłębna analiza tego problemu - ustalenie, czy jest on obecny w polskiej edukacji i jakie strategie są stosowane przez nauczycieli w celu złagodzenia skutków tego zjawiska. Aby to osiągnąć, przeprowadzone zostało badanie ankietowe wśród nauczycieli języka angielskiego ze szkół podstawowych na terenie całego kraju. Wyniki badania wskazują, że zjawisko klas wielopoziomowych jest zdecydowanie obecne w polskiej edukacji. Nauczyciele wskazali, że mają dużą swobodę w doborze materiałów - stosują sprawdzone strategie i techniki oraz samodzielnie opracowują materiały. Wyniki wskazują, że pomimo istniejących wyzwań, nauczyciele skutecznie zarządzają środowiskiem uczenia się i przekazują wiedzę uczniom o różnym poziomie znajomości języka.

This Bachelor's thesis investigates the phenomenon of multilevel classes in Polish primary education in the case of English language learning. The main aim of this study is to analyse the problem in depth - to find out whether it is present in Polish education and what strategies are used by teachers to mitigate the effects of this phenomenon. To achieve this, I conducted a survey of primary school English teachers from among schools across the country. The results of the survey indicate that the phenomenon of multilevel classes is definitely present in Polish education. Teachers indicated that they choose materials with considerable freedom - they use well-tested strategies and techniques and develop materials on their own. The findings indicate that, despite the existing challenge, teachers are effectively managing the learning environment and imparting knowledge to students with varying levels of language proficiency.
