“I like good strong words that mean something…” the analysis of the translation of culture-bound items in the Polish translation of Louisa May Alcott ‘s “Little Women” translated by Ludmiła Melchior-Yahil

Streszczenie Celem pracy jest zbadanie elementów kulturowych w XIX-wiecznej powieści amerykańskiej autorki Louisy May Alcott „Małe kobietki” i sprawdzenie, jakie techniki i strategie tłumaczeniowe były najczęściej stosowane podczas ich tłumaczenia i jaki był rezultat tych wyborów. W tym celu przeprowadzono porównanie tłumaczenia Ludmiły Melhior-Yahil z oryginałem. W pierwszym rozdziale omówione zostało zagadnienie elementów kulturowych w przekładzie oraz zaprezentowane zostały klasyfikacje Newmarka i Florina. Kolejny rozdział poświęcony został technikom i strategiom tłumaczeniowym; w szczególności klasyfikacji technik tłumaczeniowych Vinaya i Darbelneta, na podstawie których została przeprowadzona późniejsza analiza tłumaczeń elementów kulturowych. Cały materiał badawczy został podzielony według grup tematycznych, a następnie przeanalizowany pod kątem zastosowanych przez tłumaczkę technik oraz strategii tłumaczeniowych. W ostatnim rozdziale omówiono wyniki analizy.

Abstract The aim of this thesis is to examine the cultural elements in the 19th century novel Little Women written by the American author Louisa May Alcott and to see which translation techniques and strategies were most commonly used when translating them and what was the result of these choices. With this aim, a comparison of Ludmiła Melhior-Yahil's translation with the original was carried out. In the first chapter, cultural elements are discussed and Newmark's and Florin's classifications are presented. The next chapter was devoted to translation techniques and strategies; in particular Vinay and Darbelnet's classification of translation techniques, on the basis of which the translation of cultural elements was analysed. All the research material was divided according to thematic groups and then analysed in terms of the techniques and translation strategies used by the translator. The analysis shows that it is not possible to unequivocally identify a dominant translation strategy.
