The Devil’s Freedom: On Tolerance in Central and Eastern Europe

Artykuł analizuje korespondencję węgierskiego humanisty Andreasa Duditha z genewskim teologiem kalwińskim Teodorem Bezą w latach 1569–1571. W tej wymianie Beza użył frazy „diabelska wolność”, aby skrytykować szerokie swobody religijne w Polsce i Siedmiogrodzie, przeciwstawiając je zdyscyplinowanemu porządkowi religijnemu, który preferował. This paper analyzes the correspondence between Hungarian humanist Andreas Dudith and Geneva-based Calvinist theologian Theodore Beza during the period of 1569—1571. In this exchange, Beza used the phrase “Devil’s liberty” to critique the extensive religious freedoms in Poland and Transylvania, contrasting them with the disciplined religious order he favored. The paper explores the origins, implications, and cross-confessional reception of Beza’s expressions within the context of shifting confessional dynamics in Europe. By highlighting the widespread international reception of this correspondence, the paper argues that it reconfigures our understanding of religious tolerance during this period.
