The Devil’s Freedom: On Tolerance in Central and Eastern Europe

dc.abstract.enThis paper analyzes the correspondence between Hungarian humanist Andreas Dudith and Geneva-based Calvinist theologian Theodore Beza during the period of 1569—1571. In this exchange, Beza used the phrase “Devil’s liberty” to critique the extensive religious freedoms in Poland and Transylvania, contrasting them with the disciplined religious order he favored. The paper explores the origins, implications, and cross-confessional reception of Beza’s expressions within the context of shifting confessional dynamics in Europe. By highlighting the widespread international reception of this correspondence, the paper argues that it reconfigures our understanding of religious tolerance during this period. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of Eastern and Western European approaches to tolerance and the impact of practical experiences on theoretical perspectives, offering a nuanced understanding of the historical development of religious tolerance.

W tej wymianie Beza użył frazy „diabelska wolność”, aby skrytykować szerokie swobody religijne w Polsce i Siedmiogrodzie, przeciwstawiając je zdyscyplinowanemu porządkowi religijnemu, który preferował. Artykuł bada pochodzenie, implikacje i międzywyznaniowe odbiór wyrażeń Bezy w kontekście zmieniającej się dynamiki konfesyjnej w Europie. Podkreślając szeroki międzynarodowy odbiór tej korespondencji, artykuł argumentuje, że przekształca ona nasze rozumienie tolerancji religijnej w tym okresie. Zwraca uwagę na wzajemne powiązania między wschodnioeuropejskimi a zachodnioeuropejskimi podejściami do tolerancji oraz na wpływ doświadczeń praktycznych na perspektywy teoretyczne, oferując zniuansowane spojrzenie na historyczny rozwój tolerancji religijnej.
